The OT law is clear: "You shall not murder" (20:13). Yet Jesus revealed the deeper meaning of this law (Matt. 5:21–26). According to Him, we can murder someone in more than one way—not just with weapons or our hands but with angry or hateful words. Our words can kill a person's emotions or spirit just as swiftly as our weapons can destroy the body. The truth is, anger is often a prelude to physical violence or murder. If a person is angry enough to rage at someone with hateful words, he or she might be near the tipping point.
