The Shulamite's brothers reminisced about her childhood, when they anticipated the day when someone would speak for her. She would either be a "wall" and guard her purity—in which case they would honor her—or be a "door" of promiscuity, in which case they would protect her from herself by locking her up. In the self-control of love, she could say: I have been chaste. I have been pure. My virginity is still intact. And I am now a mature woman who has found favor in the eyes of my beloved, for I have given him the most important thing I could give my mate.
