Recommended Role Models

Philippians 2:17-30

In the second half of chapter 2, Paul gives the Philippians three solid Christian role models to emulate:

    • Paul, an example of selflessness (2:17, 18). He was selfless in the discipline of his own life. He was selfless in disciplining Timothy (2:22). He was selfless in dealing with the Philippians and was ready to die for those he loved (2 Tim. 4:6). He was selfless in determining God's will (1:21).
    • Timothy, an example of service (2:19–22). Paul mentions Timothy twenty-four times in his letters, and Timothy is identified with Paul in five letters. Timothy served others, the Lord, and the cause of the gospel.
    • Epaphroditus, an example of suffering (2:25–30). Paul describes Epaphroditus as a fellow soldier and warrior. The phrase "not regarding his life" translates the Greek word paraboleumai, which is used only here in the NT. It means "to gamble or bet." Epaphroditus gambled (risked) his life to fulfill the work he was given to do. The early Christians called those who risked their lives for Christ "Parabolani" or "the Riskers."
