The OT reveals that Sychar is the same as the city of Shechem. It lies along a narrow gorge about 34 miles north of Jerusalem and about 15 miles south of the city of Samaria. Entering the gorge from the south, we come upon Sychar and the place of Jacob's well.
Genesis 33 says that Jacob purchased a field near Shechem, and Joshua 24:32 says that Joseph was buried in that field, so this place was well known. In fact, it was treasured as holy ground by all the descendants of the patriarchs. This hallowed place is where Jesus met a woman known simply as the woman of Samaria.
