While the word Selah appears in the Psalms 71 times, it does not appear in any other book of the Bible except Habakkuk. Selah is likely a musical direction, which probably signals a pause to either elevate to a higher key or to simply reflect on what is being sung to the Lord. When we read Selah, it is a reminder to stop and think on what God is telling us. Another indication that these words of Habakkuk were likely intended to be accompanied by music occurs at the end of the book: "To the Chief Musician. With my stringed instruments." Perhaps verses 17–19 of chapter 3 became a hymn.
