Paul uses a mother's love to illustrate how church leaders should minister to the family of God. Those called to shepherding and teaching ought to have the same spirit toward the believers in their care that a mother has for her children. A mother tirelessly cares for her children, showing concern for their health, companions, nutrition, safety, progress, comfort, and happiness. For as long as children live—even into adulthood—they are rooted in their mothers' hearts; so the people of God should be rooted in their spiritual shepherds' hearts.
