The friendship between David and Jonathan is in some ways like the friendship we have with God:

God chooses us (jer 31:3). |
| Jonathan sacrificed his position as heir to the throne for David (18:4) | Jesus sacrificed his throne to come to earth and die on our behalf (John 15:13) |
| Jonathan was a faithful friend (20:16) | God is our faithful friend (Prov. 18:24; 2 Tim. 2:13) |
| Jonathan warned David of danger and protected him (20:34-42). | God protects us (Ps. 68:5) |
