Paul provides us with some principles for building the temple of God—the local assembly of believers: Begin with the foundation of the church, Jesus Christ. If the foundation is not right, the rest of the building will be wrong. On top of the foundation, the floor of the church is laid. This floor is the testimony of the apostles and the prophets (Ephesians 2:20). The Word of God is their record of that testimony. Next, the framework of the church should be constructed. Every body of believers is ideally in the building process right now—with each person a part of this structure. As we serve the body, using our gifts and our resources, we are adding on to the framework of this temple. The question with which we must always be concerned is that of the quality of our building materials. Are we building with materials that are proven to last, gold, silver and precious stones or? Or are we building with wood, hay, and stubble?
