The Hebrew people had to be on constant guard against being deceived: "Take heed to yourselves," the Lord warned, "lest . . . you serve other gods and worship them." When a Christian reads these words, she or he might say, "But I would never let myself be deceived!" Really? Sophisticated people are deceived all the time. Sometime these deceptions are in areas of finance or health; most ruinous is deception in an area where one's eternal destiny is at risk (Luke 21:8; 1 Cor. 6:9; 15:33; Gal. 6:7; James 1:16).
